Backup offensive lineman Cade Briggs, who played in two games last season, was removed from the Texas Tech roster on Tuesday. Briggs needed to leave the team for personal reasons, a Tech athletics spokesman said. The senior from Las Vegas, Nevada, transferred to Tech last year from New Mexico. Briggs started 24 games for the Lobos, the last 19 at left tackle. He was a backup at center and guard for the Red Raiders. Those were Briggs' first four years in college football, so he has two seasons left, counting the Covid-bonus year the NCAA awards players who were on rosters during the disrupted 2020 season. - Lubbock Avalanche Journal

The Cougars return 36 letterwinners including 17 on offense, 16 on defense and three on special teams. The group includes eight offensive linemen including all five starters and two, in Cam'Ron Johnson and Patrick Paul, who were 2022 First-Team All-Conference honorees. The group will be tutored by first-year Run Game Coordinator and Offensive Line Coach Eman Naghavi who joined the Cougars in January following a decorated season in the same position at Tulane. After missing the entire 2022 season due to injury, Houston welcomes back running back Alton McCaskill IV who set the program's true freshman rushing touchdowns record in 2021. He is accompanied by wideout Matthew Golden who broke UH's all-time receiving touchdowns record among true freshman a season ago. - Houston Football

Former Oklahoma Sooners EDGE Clayton Smith announced his transfer to Arizona State on Thursday. Smith was a five-star recruit by Rivals and a four-star prospect by 247Sports and ESPN, making him the highest-ranked player to transfer to ASU via the portal. Arizona just missed out on landing another five-star recruit in EDGE Anthony Lucas on Jan. 11, but the Scottsdale Chapparal High School graduate chose to transfer from Texas A&M to USC instead of staying home.

The 6-foot-4, 245-pound redshirt sophomore will have three years of eligibility as he joins a Sun Devil football program that is now under new leadership with head coach Kenny Dillingham at the helm. In seven career games over the last two seasons at Oklahoma, Smith accumulated eight tackles (four solo and four assisted) and 1.5 tackles for loss to go along with one fumble recovery. - ArizonaSports.com

Penn State has picked up a second transfer portal wide receiver for the 2023 season. Former Florida State WR Malik McClain announced his commitment to the Nittany Lions Wednesday. McClain spent his first two seasons at FSU before entering the portal this offseason. He was a four-star recruit in the 2021 recruiting class and held an offer from the Nittany Lions as a high school recruit. He went on to 396 yards and five touchdowns on 33 receptions for the Seminoles over the 2021 and 2022 seasons.

The 6-foot-4, 200-pound McClain joins former Kent State wide receiver Dante Cephas as the program's offseason transfer portal additions. The two new Nittany Lions could play a major role in the offense next season as Penn State reshapes the position following the departures of Parker Washington and Mitch Tinsley for the NFL and the firing of WRs coach Taylor Stubblefield. - Centre Times

Former Florida State wide receiver Malik McClain announced that he was transferring to Penn State to continue his college career. McClain only spent about a week in the portal before landing with the Nittany Lions. The Florida native developed into a member of the rotation at wide receiver after signing with the Seminoles in the 2021 class. He showed promise as a true freshman, playing in all 12 games and starting nine of them. However, McClain struggled to put it all together and wasn't guaranteed a major role this upcoming season with 11 other scholarship receivers still on the roster. - Tomahawknation.com

Arizona State Sun Devils defensive lineman Nesta Jade Silvera on Saturday accepted his invitation to play in the 2023 Senior Bowl. Silvera becomes the first Sun Devil to be playing in the exhibition game at Hancock Whitney Stadium in Mobile, Alabama, on Feb. 4 in front of NFL scouts. The 6-foot-2, 315-pound defensive lineman announced his declaration for April's draft in Kansas City on Dec. 13.

Silvera spent the first four years of his collegiate career as a Miami Hurricane before graduating and transferring to Arizona State for his lone season in Tempe. In 10 games for the Sun Devils this past season, the graduate student totaled 51 tackles (18 solo), three tackles for loss, 0.5 sacks, two passes defensed and one forced fumble. - Arizonasports.com

Travion Brown, a veteran Washington State defender who shared first-team snaps at middle linebacker this year, has entered the NCAA's transfer portal, according to multiple reports Friday. A graduate transfer, Brown has one season of eligibility remaining. He never used his redshirt at WSU. The 6-foot-3, 230-pounder played in 11 games this season, starting two. He and redshirt freshman Francisco Mauigoa rotated frequently at the middle linebacker position. Brown finished the regular season sixth on the team with 49 tackles, adding five tackles for loss, 1½ sacks and a fumble recovery.

Brown came to WSU in 2019 out of Linfield Christian School of Temecula, California, as a three-star recruit and a top-20 outside linebacker in the country, per 247Sports.com. He chose the Cougars over offers from Washington, Oregon, Utah and Minnesota, among others, and claimed a playing role at WSU immediately. Brown made five starts at nickel during his true freshman season and earned All-Pac-12 second-team recognition for his special-teams exploits. He played sparingly in 2020, then established himself as a backup option at linebacker in 2021 and saw plenty of action off the bench behind mainstay LB Justus Rogers. Brown finishes his WSU career with 39 appearances, 132 tackles, 7½ TFLs, 1½ sacks, one interception, one forced fumble and two fumble recoveries. - Spokesman-Review

The Oregon Ducks are losing an offensive lineman to transfer. Redshirt-freshman Bram Walden is entering the transfer portal, he announced Saturday. "I just want to thank the University of Oregon for making my experience for these last 2 years and I'll always be grateful for this opportunity," Walden wrote via Instagram. "I want to thank all of the coaches, players, my family, friends and faculty that have made my time here truly special. I want to thank the man above for always having a plan for me and allowing me to be where I am today. "With that being said, I am entering the transfer portal and I'm looking forward to furthering my academic and athletic career. Thank you! Go Ducks!" Walden battled a knee injury during his two seasons at UO. He did not play while redshirting in 2021 and appeared in two games this season, against Cal and Colorado. Although action doesn't officially start until Monday, among the reported quarterbacks in transfer portal or planning to join as of Dec. 1 is Georgia Tech's Jeff Sims: Sims was one of the nation's top 20 quarterbacks in the 2020 recruiting class in the On3 Consensus rankings, but has been inconsistent with the Yellow Jackets. He started 10 games as a true freshman on a bad team during the COVID season, and may not truly have been ready to start. Sims started six games in 2021 and the first seven this season before being sidelined by an injury. He is seventh in school history in both passing yards and total offense. Sims has good size (6-4, 219) and is a definite running threat. 2022 ALL-BIG SKY FIRST TEAM: RB Cameron Skattebo (SAC),...Skattebo is the third Sacramento State player to earn Big Sky Offensive Player of the Year following running back Charles Roberts (1998, 1999) and quarterback Kevin Thomson (2019). Skattebo was also named to the all-Big Sky first team after a season in which he rushed for 1,251 yards. The sophomore also caught 24 passes for 281 yards and finished the year with nine total touchdowns (5 rushing, 3 receiving, 1 kick return). He had seven 100-yard games during the season, including a season high 201 at Eastern Washington. The Rio Linda, Calif., native is currently sixth in school single season history for rushing yards and is second with an average of 7.41 yards per carry. Georgia Tech has lost two quarterbacks for the rest of the season with former starter Jeff Sims nursing a foot injury and No. 1 backup Zach Pyron out with a broken collarbone, interim coach Brent Key said Tuesday. Sims, the team's starter since 2020, will spend the rest of the season in treatment and will not be a part of team activities, Key said. Sims dressed the last three weeks and was listed as available on an emergency basis but he didn't take a snap when Pyron was injured and had to leave last week's 35-14 home loss to Miami in the fourth quarter.

Sims initially injured his foot in a loss Oct. 20 to Virginia. "He's frustrated he has an injury that's preventing him from being full speed and allowing him to be part of the team," Key said. "Just because on paper you medically can (play), every day you wake and feel a little bit different. The ability for him to go out and be the person he wants to be on the field didn't present itself at the time." Zach Gibson, a transfer from Akron, will start when Georgia Tech (4-6, 3-4 Atlantic Coast Conference) visits No. 13 North Carolina (9-1, 6-0) on Saturday. Taisun Phommachanh, a transfer from Clemson, will serve as the primary backup. Phommachanh, who played in 13 games over three seasons as a backup with Clemson, has not taken a snap this year.
